Dark Play or Stories for Boys begins with a college aged Nick chatting with Molly, a girl he just slept with. When she asks him about some mysterious scars, he debates whether he should tell her the truth or make up a story, as he often does. As he debates in his mind, he tells the audience the real story.
At 14, Nick was in his high school drama class when he first learned what a "Dark Play" was. It was a dangerous game where some players know the rules and the others don't know it's a game. This interests him and he decides to try some games of "Dark Play" on the internet in chatrooms, fooling people into believing he is someone he is not. This begins to bore him and he must find a bigger challenge.
He finds Adam online. Adam is a local 16 year old whose online profile begins with the words "I want to fall in love," followed by a description of his perfect woman. Nick decides to become that perfect woman and creates an online profile for Rachel, the girl of Adam's dreams. Adam and Rachel quickly hit it off. Soon, Adam's demands to meet Rachel increase and Nick must bury himself deeper and deeper into the lie, creating more and more "people" in Rachel's life.
Can Nick keep up? Will Adam find out the truth? How did Nick get the scars? Will he tell Molly the truth, or will he lie yet again?
